Respond as if me…..

When any employee sets foot at a hospital where he/she works for, the minute entrance is made, caring is the essence of what happens in that institution. Whether it is the nurse that is assigned to a patient, or environmental services keeping all departments sanitary, or dietary services elaborating multiple recipes to suit patients’ diverse diet needs, or as simple as guiding a caregiver trying to find the room where a loved one is admitted, all the above are founded in caring. Any sick person whether attending a hospital, or the clinic to see his PCP, or just reaching a relative that will attend to him or her while sick, is just trying to attain one thing: caring.

If we are to care for the sick, the foundation of it is caring, caring with the heart and mind to do everything that is humanly possible to return the ill person to his healthy status. Even when there is a vast amount of nursing theories to pick from, I feel Watson’s Theory of Caring is the essence of healthcare and undoubtedly the core of nursing, therefore my selection of this theory throughout this course.

I also selected this theory as its values are what keep me during the roughest days on this profession. Feeling that our jobs turn everyday more challenging by simply asking us to do more with less, I remind myself that all faced vicissitudes are worth the feeling of doing my greatest deed for my patients every day. Moreover, caring for cancer patients is very challenging, but only when internalizing that caring is more than curing, then our profession is felt to be soo rewarding. As a personal reflection, I believe I use Watson’s theory on my daily practice as my professional Bible.

In my future practice I will continue to use this theory despite not having direct contact with patients, however, maintaining focus on the actual patient while integrating technology as a tool to provide safe and competent care is vital in meeting the needs of the patient (Hill, 2013, p. 2). Informatic nurses not only serve the ultimate recipient- the patient, but clinicians as well. The beauty of nursing informaticists is that we provide the tools, training, confidence and proficiency other healthcare providers need to operate, hence, making it remunerating as well. Nurses informaticists are the source where technology and caring meet, this making us a foundation of knowledge for the nursing profession.
