The year 2017 has witnessed a lot of global disasters including storms, earthquakes, hurricanes, and wildfires. These disasters have caused great damage to the world and its population. One of the hazardous disasters is the wildfires. The Western part of the United States, especially Northern California, has suffered greatly from wildfires this year. The flames have spread to several parts of the landscape, destroying the wineries, and killing “at least 29 people”. The dispersed nature of these wildfires is a major concern to the experts and the authorities. In the past years, the flames had grouped in a solitary state or territory. But this year the wildfires have not just burned on more fronts but have also been nearer to vigorously populated territories.
The scientists are concerned that these wildfires are somewhat associated with the increasing climate change. The rising temperatures are making the vegetation drier which is increasing the risk of wildfires. Fires can easily get started by storms and lightning and even by the opening up of the forests to the public. The fires are also fanned by the strong winds as pointed out by some experts. Moreover, the carbon emissions and the ash from such blazes are not only dangerous for the climate but also for the human population.
Wildfires can cause immense destruction and the sooner it is detected, the sooner resources can be used to lessen the amount of destruction it causes. Various early warning systems are used to detect any such fire and immediate action is taken to control the fire. The immediate resources of recovery include the firefighters, paramedics, and the police. However, various other resources are also used in the disaster recovery and management.
First of all, the evacuation centers are used to minimize the destruction to the human population. Healthcare personnel help in providing treatment to the victims and help in reducing and addressing the health concerns. Health risk and crisis communication is a significant behavioral health management that is followed after a community disaster. Moreover, workplace management is another effective measure that is taken in disaster recovery as it restores the community functioning. The efforts are made to repair the infrastructure and to recover the area affected from such fires by replanting trees and shrubs and dispersing additional soil. The landowners and homeowners are advised to take certain safety measures after returning back to their property.
Furthermore, various effective measures are required to be taken to prevent wildfires from causing such destruction. There a need to raise awareness among the public regarding their behavior while they are out in the wild for camping. There must be a proper training program for the population regarding wildfires. Fire resistant homes can also prove effective in reducing the damage. Secondly, close monitoring and strategic management of the forests would be an effective way to avoid widespread fires in the future. Most importantly, changing the mindsets is most important in dealing with the disasters. The governments and societies should be well aware and proactive in facing every disaster and for that, there is a need to make recovery and disaster management policies.
To conclude, disasters are very destructive in their nature. Since the climate is changing drastically, there is a probability that disasters are likely to increase in the coming years. So, there is a need to plan properly and in advance as to how the effects of such disasters can be minimized.
