In other words, there is a spiritual battle around us that we can not see. This reality is difficult to fathom, but it is confirmed throughout the Bible, even in the life of Jesus when he went into the desert to face the devil. Sometimes we may wonder what this “spiritual struggle” really looks like. Is it full of swords, shields and armor or are there special angel swords? The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains its nature. St. Augustine says about them: “The name of an angel indicates his office, not his nature. If you ask by its nature, I will tell you that it is a spirit; if you ask for what he does, I’ll tell you he’s an angel ” Angels are created spirits, without bodies, with understanding and free will. Just as God is by nature a pure spirit, angels are pure, disembodied spirits. Thus, they are made in the likeness of God in a way that humans are not. Angels are often represented with “wings,” not because they possess them, but because that is how their speed and function as messengers are symbolized. Although they do not possess bodies like us, they are capable of fighting other spiritual creatures. The most famous example is in the book of Revelation, where the Archangel Michael expels Satan from heaven. And so the great Dragon was precipitated, the ancient Serpent, called Devil or Satan, and the seducer of the whole world was thrown on the earth with all his angels. (Revelation 12.9) This passage does not offer us any new ideas, beyond the fact that demons can be “thrown out”. Since they are pure spirit, this was not a physical act, but a spiritual one.
