We can work on Importance of Sports for the UAE Population

Abstract

Sports activities provide countries and their residents with various physical and economic benefits. However, there lacks clarity regarding the extent to which such events are essential in the daily lives of different categories of UAE residents. This inquiry seeks to determine how various sporting activities would benefit the country’s population. The investigation’s sample would incorporate participants from both genders and all age groups since the impacts of sports activities would be widespread. Therefore, the study would inform the need to invest in the events accordingly.

Keywords: sports activities, physical activities, economic benefits, age groups, and genders.

Research Problem

How much is sport important in everyday life for different groups of people in the UAE?

Research Motivation

Sports activities provide numerous benefits to the UAE, which forms the basis of this study. Recently, the country has experienced rapid economic growth, leading to increased prevalence of lifestyle diseases, such as obesity and diabetes (Katsaiti and El Anshasy 3649). The situation is attributed to the change from a semi-nomadic society to an affluent one, where individuals consume energy-dense meals and engage in minimal physical activities (Abdulle et al. 2). The lack of exercise and obesity increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases in the country, particularly among women (Alshaikh et al. 2). Therefore, the introduction of different sports activities would encourage UAE residents to participate in numerous physical exercise, which would help reduce the risk of lifestyle diseases. Furthermore, the country is gradually shifting away from overreliance on the oil sector and diversifying the economy through industries such as tourism: sports activities market the country as a destination for visitors.

Brief Literature Overview

Sports activities provide countries with various benefits. For instance, they provide a platform where individuals can engage in physical activities, thereby enhancing one’s health through movement control and improved coordination, desirable body weight, and the proper functioning of body tissues and organs, such as the heart and lungs (Knopf 1). In addition, such events encourage an active lifestyle for minors, which facilitates brain, cognitive, and physical health (Chaddock-Heyman et al. 25). In the UAE, falconry has become a heritage sport, thereby enabling individuals to observe their culture (Wakefield 280). Moreover, the self-determination theories explains how motivation compels individuals to participate in physical exercise, part of which includes sports, to achieve better health outcomes (Teixeira et al. 1). The economic theory illustrates the contribution of professional sports to commercial development in an area. On this note, a favorable sports policy would ensure a healthy population in the future. Moreover, sports activities provide numerous economic benefits through creating employment, providing a market for sports equipment and merchandise, and generating revenue by selling social entertainment (Yang 1). This inquiry would convince individuals to participate in sports activities to attain certain health objectives and policy makers to make allocations for development in this area.

Purpose Statement

The aims of this mixed methods study are to (a) relate the effects of sports activities to desirable social, health, and economic welfare of UAE citizens and (b) explore how such events would benefit the citizens through a change in lifestyles.

Statistical Motivation

Conducting this investigation is necessary as it would help the UAE attain numerous objectives. First, the country would minimize the economic burden associated with various lifestyle diseases. Such resources can be invested in other sectors for development purposes. Furthermore, alleviating such ailments would promote public health in the country, which would minimize health disruptions among productive employees through sick leaves and time-offs to seek treatment. Lastly, the country is branding itself as a leading tourist destination, and sports activities would help the nation attain this objective. For instance, the Abu Dhabi hosts different sports events, including Formula 1 at the Yas Marina Circuit, HSBC European tour golf Championship, and Mubadala World Tennis Championship (Valek and Al Buainain 53). Hence, this investigation would provide tangible evidence as to why the UAE government should invest in sports activities in the country.

Research Puzzle

Sports activities would be beneficial to UAE residents because they would not only help them maintain good physical health to avoid lifestyle diseases but also help create employment opportunities and market the country as a tourist destination. Consequently, the government should consider making serious investments in the sector.
