Sustainability plans typically include several key elements: a community vision, goals and objectives, key stakeholders, budget requirements, practices and interventions, and an action plan. Although the elements of sustainability plans often are similar, every sustainability plan is different in the issues and problems it addresses. Some plans target poor transportation systems, while other plans target limited housing opportunities. Regardless of the issues or problems addressed, to be successful every plan must incorporate the three components of sustainability: the environment, the economy, and society. This is where theory translates to practice.

To prepare for this assignment:

  • Review the article “Community Sustainability Planning.” Pay particular attention to characteristics of effective sustainability plans.
  • Review the course media “Foundations of Sustainable Community Development.” Consider the three components of the sustainability model: the environment, the economy, and society. Reflect on how sustainability plans might incorporate and reflect each of the three components.
  • Review the article “Toward Just Sustainability in Urban Communities: Building Equity Rights With Sustainable Solutions.” Consider the importance of integrating environmental justice and social equity into sustainability plans and programs.
  • Using the Internet or the Walden University Library, find two specific sustainability plans from different communities to compare for this assignment.
