Review the major aspects of how the human immune system functions. How is the proper functioning of this system of major importance to all other systems in the body? What kinds of things can go wrong with the immune function and how do these problems interfere with human life?
Sample Answer
The human immune system is a complex network of cells, tissues, and proteins that work together to defend the body against infection and disease. It is made up of two main parts: the innate immune system and the adaptive immune system.
Innate Immune System
The innate immune system is the body’s first line of defense against infection. It is activated immediately after the body is exposed to a pathogen, such as a virus or bacteria. The innate immune system includes:
- Physical barriers, such as the skin and mucous membranes, which prevent pathogens from entering the body
- Chemical barriers, such as acids and enzymes, which kill or damage pathogens that do enter the body
- Immune cells, such as phagocytes and natural killer cells, which engulf and destroy pathogens
