Abstract
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals are no longer considered mentally ill due to their sexual orientation per se. However, a larger proportion of the society still holds that sexual orientation of these individuals is abnormal and amoral. The society also stigmatizes mental illness. In this regard, mental illness in these individuals leads to dual stigmatization. This article examines the impact of discrimination, prejudice, and stereotypes on mental and health of LGBT individuals. It also compares and critiques literature on the impact of the same factors on health of other minority groups such as homeless youth of African American, Latino, and Asian American origin.
