I am allowing you to choose which group you focus on for your ‘Dealing with Differences in Healthcare’ paper.  The reason is that I want you to find a good an informant to interview as you can, so you’ll need the flexibility to do that.  The only rule is that the cultural group you research cannot be your own.  This is a diversity class, so I want you to discover something about a group you may not be as familiar with…

 

One piece of advice:  Keep in mind that this is a research paper, so it will make your life a lot easier if you do a group that’s broad enough or well-research enough that there’s a body of healthcare-related research on the group.  For example, there’s probably plenty of research on health issues among the Chinese. But if you’re looking at Singaporeans, it might be easier to broaden the group to Asians in general.  Use your best judgement.

 

DO NOT CHOOSE HISPANIC OR MEXICAN CULTURE

 

While you will not have time to deal with each area, please choose the information that is most relevant to understanding human difference and the responsibility of health care workers for responding to these differences in a health care setting.  Please have at least five outside sources in addition to your interview and other course materials.

 

Interview Basic Information

 

Immigration background, language, religious beliefs/practices.

 

Most challenging/difficult aspects of American culture for them.

 

Family patterns, roles, and relationships.

 

Customs and behaviors, food, holidays and celebrations.

 

Recreation and leisure activities.

 

Degree of Assimilation: where do they feel they fit in?

 

What health issues are unique to the cultural group you are researching? What does a health care worker need to be most concerned about when dealing with members of your specific cultural group? In what ways might nursing care be particularly sensitive to those who are members of this cultural group?

 

Discuss three aspects of the cultural group that are the most difficult for you to understand. Explain why characteristics of your culture and that of your cultural group might cause these difficulties.

 

Using ideas from the text, readings, class and outside sources, list steps and/or principles health care workers can use to avoid negative stereotyping, judging, or prejudice against the cultural group.

 

 

 

Mention any emotional responses, changes in thinking, or insights you personally gained from your research.
