We can work on Critical Thinking Questions

Question One

More people have been killed by drowning in molasses than by coyote attacks. Based on what you know now and what you see on that site, how should you treat the credibility of the claim?

Comparing the 1919 Great Boston Molasses Flood and the reported Coyote attacks, a number of reliable sources provide premises that prove that, more people have been killed by drowning in molasses than by coyote attacks. According to Chia (2016) report, a storage tank with approximately 2.3 million gallons of molasses, moving at a speed of 35mp and a height of 25ft exploded on 15th January 1919. The Wikipedia article mentions that the molasses disaster accounted for 21 deaths and 150 injuries (Wikipedia, 2017). Various researchers have tried to attach meaning to the issue to determine the exact variables that influenced the viscous nature of the fluid. The researchers of Harvard University correlated the stickiness of the fluid with cold temperatures which made it possible for more lives to be claimed. Along similar lines, Jabr (2013), uses the directions of physics to imply that viscosity and the density of the fluid made it hard for people to swim in it.

On the other side, confirmed reports about coyote attacks on human suggest that such attacks only happen infrequently though with fatal injuries. As at 2006, about 160 coyote attacks happened in the United States and California State registered numerous attacks in comparison with other places. So far, two major fatal attacks that resulted in death have been confirmed while others were considered non-fatal. That being said, it is rational to think that more people have been killed by drowning in molasses than by coyote attacks (Wikipedia, 2017).

Question Two

Imagine that you go into your home and see muddy footprints on the floor from shoes you know are not your own. Give examples of two plausible explanations and two unlikely explanations for the footprints.

Two plausible explanations for the muddy footprints are that my “not so concerned” brother dropped by to pick something and left the footprints, or someone might have broken in to steal something. Two unlikely explanations about the same are that, ghost cases are real; one appeared in my house. The other explanation would be that my neighbor water pouring out of my opened kitchen tap and came to close it.

Question Three

Tyler and Grace water their amaryllis plant regularly yet for some reason the plant withers and dies. Tyler suggests, “Maybe there was some peculiar property of this particular amaryllis that caused water molecules to react with the soil molecules and chemically change into arsenic molecules, and the arsenic poisoned the plant.” Identify one drawback of Tyler’s proposed explanation.

In his proposed explanation, Tyler correlates the death of amaryllis plant with some sort of chemical happening that resulted due to watering the plant. His explanation is quite confusing since it is irrational to think that watering the plant may be the exact cause of the death of the plant.

Question Four

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKA0htesJOA&feature=youtu.be in the situation presented in the video, what was in need of an explanation?

The video is a blank page on YouTube, therefore it is impossible to identify what was in need of an explanation.

Question Five

Anwar’s Dilemma: Which of the following is a strategy that Anwar uses when he is generating possible solutions to his problem?  Work backward, talk to other people for ideas accomplish sub-goals or explore potential causes.

In his dilemma, Anwar uses a strategy that involves talking to other people for ideas in order to generate possible solutions to his problem.

Question Six

Explain how the following sentence could be read in two different ways:

Da’Shawn gave her dog food.

The above sentence could be read like this- Da’Shawn gave food to a dog that belonged to another female individual or, Da’Shawn fed her dog because it was starving.

Question Seven

Natalia claims, “Our society would be better off if we reformed education, improved the health care system, eliminated government waste, and stopped giving handouts to people who don’t deserve it.” Provide at least two examples of vague words or phrases in Natalia’s sentence that would need clarifying before you could truly understand and evaluate her argument.

In order to understand and evaluate Natalia’s claims, I would need to identify the following two examples as vague words: eliminated government waste and stopped giving handouts to people who don’t deserve it.

Question Eight

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0HfwkArpvU&feature=youtu.be • How might someone who doesn’t speak English respond to this video differently from someone who is fluent in English? • Using one of the words depicted in the video, come up with a phrase that has an ambiguous meaning. Bottom of Form

In this particular case, the language does not influence how one will respond to the video since the video is not there in the first place. In that case, it is impossible to identify a phrase that has an ambiguous meaning.

Conclusion

Critical thinking oversimplifies most complex situations with an objective of obtaining an in-depth analysis of the same, using languages that one is clearly familiar with. The above questions exemplify how critical thinking can be used to solve multifaceted situations using ideas which generate well-thought solutions.
