National Economic Competitive Analysis (NECA Report)
Purpose: The purpose of this team-driven project is to give you experience analyzing national economies and their regional and global interdependencies. Such information is critical for making risk and opportunity assessments about trade, investment, production and supply chains, and for keeping abreast of the strengths, weaknesses and long-term developments of the global marketplace.
You will be evaluated on how well you apply the frameworks and concepts from our texts and class discussions. Note that each section of the report follows the topics in the class schedule. Each team will be assigned a country to analyze.
Deliverables: A written report covering all parts, and a presentation on your findings, are due the last day of class. Please focus your data collection and analysis to fit each part to minimize repetition. As a rule of thumb, each section can be covered in approximately two written pages, not including any tables and figures. Include headings that correspond to the numbered sections explained below. Include only information and data that are relevant to your analysis and that you discuss explicitly in the text. Reference appropriately within the text relating the information to your references at the end of the report with footnotes, endnotes or with an author, date format. Figures and tables all need to have their own source as well as a reference within the text. If you include a table or figure, discuss it in the text. A table of contents page is not necessary. Format: 12 pt font, single spacing with one blank space between paragraphs, numbered pages, no appendices unless justified. Please have a professional cover page including all analystsâ names, project title, date, course name & number.
Data: Much of the data needed for this project can be the Global Edge DIBS database. Additional information on institutions and policy can be found in the disaggregated information in the country rankings of the Doing Business Survey (www.doingbusiness.org) and the Global Competitiveness Report (http://www.weforum.org/reports/). Information on national policies, and industrial and firm structure, can be found in a variety of places including each countryâs government documents, national newspapers, the World Bank and IMF reports on the country in question, etc. Use of some sources from your assigned country is required.

Create 1-2 key data charts for the two dimensions: economics and operations. Summarize your analysis for each dimension in 1- 2 paragraphs and the implications for the business environment.

Firmsâ strategy, structure and rivalry: Identify industries with domestic competition, and any national characteristics that may shape the nature of firms. Identify existing or emerging clusters.
- Summarize 1) the industries that are relatively developed already and those that stand to gain from these conditions, considering the full value chain; 2) the institutional voids, and opportunities and risks, you find with regards to these four broad factors in parts 3 and 4; and 3) the role that government plays as described in Porterâs Diamond.
- Trade, capital and balance of payments analysis and evaluation of sovereign risk
Using the World Bank Databank with figures as a percent of GDP, conduct a balance of payments analysis with the methodology introduced in class based on the most recent 20 years of data utilizing the two-gap model. Take the average of each 5-year span for each of the key variables and analyse the size, differences, and changes over time.
Analyse the growth potential and financial health of the economy based on the balance of payments trade and capital flows, savings and investment, and foreign currency analysis combined with data on the domestic budget and domestic debt, foreign debt, foreign exchange position, and investment quality (public, private domestic and private foreign).
In your discussion, incorporate the type of foreign currency system, and how the currency values have fluctuated over this time period. - Additional Relevant Factors

Examples could include environmental issues, energy dependency, political conditions, military peace or conflict, role of non-governmental organizations, important economic or trade agreements, recent âshocksâ to the country or region, etc. - Conclusion
Based on your analysis in parts 1-6 (7), summarize the current economic health of your assigned country. Tie this back to your thesis in the introduction. What do you expect in terms of economic progress and challenges in the next five years? What are the comparative and competitive industries/sectors? How does this economy fit into the global value chain? What are the key opportunities for business that emerge from your analysis? What are weaknesses/voids and other key risk factors present that businesses should consider in their strategies with respect to this business environment? - References
