Both of these characters struggle with mental illness and although the root of their suffering differs, their diagnoses mirror the time period in which each text was written. Septimus Smith is portrayed to be suffering from shell shock as a result of the First World War which is thus relevant to the society of 1925. In contrast, in The Hours Richard Brown is suffering from AIDs, a disease that was culturally prevalent during the 1980s-90s.
