Information technology and systems have now become ubiquitous in the developed world. Information systems are important to the private and public sectors, to individuals, organizations, nations and global institutions. Information systems pervade such diverse areas as agriculture, manufacturing, services, education, medicine, defence and government. Today, information systems affect almost everyone. A number of fields, such as computer science and software engineering, concern themselves with information technology per se. However, the discipline which focuses on the development, use and impact of information technology in business and organizational settings is ‘Information Systems’ or IS for short. This area of study is quite new ‐ it only emerged in the 1960s ‐ however, the field has grown substantially. Most universities throughout the world now leach information systems, and the field has reputable scholarly journals, prestigious international conferences, and national and international associations. Whereas much of the early research. (19) Health care involves extensive information processing for effective decision-making and for the management of patient care. Health professionals and policy-makers need timely and reliable information that will assist them in making sound decisions. It is important to have access to information in different formats (paper and electronic), information systems and locations. Ideally, where health information systems are in place, information is expected to be readily available, but this is not always the case. The implementation of Health Information Systems (HIS) in the health environment makes it imperative that health professionals acquire both the skills and the ability to use the systems, to access, interpret, and utilize information appropriately in order to render optimal health care. A hospital information system is not about computerising hospitals, but integrated activities leading to a virtual environment that will guarantee safety and total patient care.(20) In the health sector, Health Management Information Systems (HMIS) are more and more being applied, amongst others, to fulfill the – often very demanding – reporting requirements of higher institutional levels such as the Ministry of Health. Basically an HMIS is keeping track of the main outputs in a health institute. However, a HMIS can also be used as a tool for organisational development. (21) This synthesis will be of interest to general managers of transit agencies, managers of management information systems (MIS) departments, and information systems personnel, as well as operations, scheduling, maintenance, finance, and other management personnel concerned with improving information flow and data base development. The synthesis identifies the current direction and key factors of selected transit agencies that have successfully implemented MIS. The synthesis documents the range, variety, and benefits derived from the current information and examine how effectively information from special purpose systems is integrated into the overall information systems environment and used across departmental boundaries. (22) South Darfur State is located in the far southwest of Sudan. It lies between 9.30 – 13 latitude northwards and 27,15 and 28,0 longitude in the east. It is one of the three Greater Darfur states. Health Information System A system that integrates data collection, processing, reporting, and use of the information necessary for improving health service effectiveness and efficiency through better management at all levels of health services. Health Management Information System An information system specially designed to assist in the management and planning of health programmes, as opposed to delivery of care. (24)
