An 8-year-old boy, Jonathan Davies, who was previously in good health, noticed that he is increasingly thirsty in the last few months. He gets up many times at night to urinate and is frequently thirsty. Although his food intake has almost doubled, he has lost four pounds in the last month. He visits his GP after feeling nauseated, with vomiting on few occasions, in the last three days. The doctor’s examined his blood and urine. His blood glucose level was 30.3 mmol/L (typically 4.0 to 5.9 mmol/L and blood pH 7.13 (typically 7.36 to 7.44). His urine tested positive for acetone/acetoacetate.

 

 

(a). With specific reference to the patient data, indicate which patient is most likely to be this 8-year-old boy and explain why this is likely to be the case.
