Select a current (June 2022-present) news article. This can be an article in a newspaper, news magazine or online publication. It can be an objective piece written by a journalist, or an opinion “op-ed” piece.
Our essay must be a minimum two pages, double spaced with no more than 12 point font and 1 inch margins. Essays under two full pages will not earn the full points available. Our essay must accomplish three objectives:
First things first! State the title of the article, author’s name, date of the publication and where it was published (for example the New York Times or the Los Angeles Times) and provide a weblink to the article so I can read it online. Then, briefly summarize the topic or main argument of the article, in your own
words. What is the author arguing or reporting on and why? This objective is worth 5 points. No points will be awarded for text that it copied and pasted from the article itself.
Describe how the article relates to themes we have covered in class. For example, if your article is about a new law restricting gun ownership, discuss how it relates to our course discussions on this issue, such as the authority of the government to regulate guns under the 2nd amendment; political pressure of interest groups opposed to or in support of gun control; or how this law may be challenged in court. This objective is worth 10 points.
What is your opinion on the issues raised in the article? Do you agree or disagree with the author? Why or why not? Provide examples to support your opinion.
There are no wrong answers, just well-reasoned opinions. This objective is worth 10 points.
