In the film, “Mi Familia,” we saw how immigrants were treated during the big depression of the 1930s and 40s. All of the problems the U. S. was experiencing were blamed on the immigrants. Do you think that is what is happening in the U.S. today? Compare and contrast the treatment of immigrants today, including deportation and police violence against people of color. Remark on the racist terms used by the police, and their willingness to hit Mr. Sanchez, even though he was an old man.

In the film we saw several religious rituals and symbols of what some might call superstition. The near death of Chucho in the river and Maria’s certainly that the spirit of the river wanted Chucho. Also the recurring presence of the Barn Owl, and the way the camera focused on the owl. Does your family, or anyone you know have rituals and/or beliefs that are religious or cultural? If so compare and contrast with those observed by the Sanchez family.

The tragedy and trauma caused by young Jimmy seeing his brother Chucho killed by the police left Jimmy to grow up full of anger and distrust of the police and the whole system of life in the U.S. Have you seen similar instances in your community? If so compare and contrast those stories with the ones from the film.
