Vibration of Continuous Structures

Paper, Order, or Assignment Requirements

To undertake a laboratory test to determine the natural frequency of vibration of a
continuous system and then compare the results with both theory and virtual simulations.
Laboratory Procedure
USE THE CONTINUOUS STRUCTURES RIG
1. Turn on all devices
2. Measure the diameter of the rod at various positions along its length and determine
the average.
3. Insert rod into clamp so that it is vertically downward.
4. Measure the length of protrusion – use any length you want but longer lengths work
best.
5. Slowly increase frequency from 0 to maximum and observe natural frequencies and
associated mode shapes.
6. For each mode note the frequency and sketch the mode shape, including
measurements of positions of nodes and anti-nodes.
7. Repeat the procedure using a different length of protrusion.
Theory:
The theory for this exercise was derived in class and is also a standard solution in many
vibration text books. Use this theory to confirm the test results achieved.
ANSYS
ANSYS can be used to calculate the natural frequencies of a shape. Use the tutorial you have
been given to analyse each of the test lengths measured in the lab to confirm the results.
Try the calculation using both solid and beam models
Write up this lab and submit a single PDF of the report via Blackboard on or before the date
