Topic 1 (of 2):  Functional Fixedness

Having read the material about functional fixedness, reflect back into your own personal experiences to a time when you suffered from an inability to solve a problem due to functional fixedness. Describe the problem, including context, and the solution that you eventually arrived at. Perhaps someone else needed to show you how to think outside of the box or perhaps you had a moment of enlightenment that enabled you to solve the problem. Perhaps the solution didn’t become clear until after the fact. Make sure that you refer to supportive material as you discuss the problem.

Topic 2 (of 2): Pattern Learning

Experts learn to see patterns in the things in which they become experts. Anderson’s Cognitive Psychology and its Implications uses the standard example of expert chess players. While this is a fine example, there are many other examples that might be used as well, such as the ability to recognize health issues that develops in doctors and nurses, the ability to troubleshoot problems with mechanical devices that engineers and mechanics develop, and so on.

Using search terms such as pattern learning, expertise patterns, and similar variations, find a paper that discusses the topic of developing expertise. Summarize the paper and discuss its findings. writing assistance
