Tenth essay: Executive Summary due Friday, April 29th by 5 PM
Your final assignment in CJWR is to play the role of the warden who was there during the execution of Clayton Lockett, and your job is to summarize what happened, detail what went wrong, and make suggestions to the governor of Oklahoma about what steps to take now that there is a short moratorium on executions in that state. Thus, you are writing a short “policy analysis” to present to the governor about how executions should be handled in the future. Do not argue about the death penalty. Your job could include these issues: Studying methods of executions that are fail safe; anticipating lawsuits based upon Eighth Amendment arguments; and suggesting alternative means of executions.

Here is how to present your policy analysis:

Page 1. Instead of doing a title page, use the letter format from the warden (you) to the governor of Oklahoma (Governor Mary Fallin); you will be writing a letter to the governor. Find out her name and address and make it a formal looking letter. Briefly tell the governor who you are, why you are writing to her, and that you would like her response as soon as possible, since the moratorium was only for 14 days.

Page 2. Executive summary of the issue (this is a very short description of the problem that must be addressed; it’s like an abstract). On page two of the letter to the governor, write an executive summary by doing the following: Describe the problem and what happened on the day of the execution and then summarize what you will be addressing in the text of the policy analysis. This is the ONLY thing on this page.

Page 3. Text of your essay: 1) describe the problem again; 2) describe any immediate actions taken; 3) note how many inmates are currently due to be executed; 4) detail possible ideas for new means of executions in Oklahoma; and 5) give your recommendations as to your preferred solution and your timeline to implement the solution (this is ALL fiction: Have fun making it up!)
