Student source three recent scientific research papers which use CRISPR/Cas to address an important scientific question. The written assignment will consist of a 2,000 (+/-) 200 word essay of the following format:
1. Introduction (500 words – 10 marks): give a concise but informative description of CRISPR/Cas and its adaptation to biotechnology (use at least one diagram)
2. Paper summaries (600 words – 15 marks): For each of three papers, give: + a full citation (authors, title, publication details) in Harvard style + a one to two paragraph summary of the paper (no more than 200 words). this must be different from the published abstract or author summary, and must be in your own words. the summary should include the ‘big’ biological question that the paper was addressing; the major research findings of the paper; and how CRISPR/Cas was used in the research. + you can include a figure from the paper but be sure to reference it properly and add a figure legend.
3. Cloning stratergy (300 – 5 marks): for one of the paers, describe in detail the cloning stratergy used to subclone CRISPR/Cas. this requires some detail (restriction enzyme sites, DNA fragment sizes and orientation, synthetic oligonucleotides, cloning vectors and so on) and a complete understanding of the relevant paper’s methods section. Do not copy the section or any part of the methods – use your own words. You will probably require to more writing than is in the original paper. This will take some detective work because often the methods sections refer to previous papers or do not give full details. You may also have to locate the gene sequence, cloning vectors and or primer sequences crucial to their cloning strategy. It is essential to include at least one figure in your answer which illustrates the strategy used.
4. Compare and contrast the three papers (450 words – 10 marks): consider the following: + how do the papers differ in their use of CRISPR? + do all papers use the same form of technology? + which paper showed the most innovative use of CRISPR, and why? + which paper used CRISPR to make the most important advance in our scientific knowledge?
5. Discussion (450 words – 10 marks): + how did the use of CRISPR in these papers advance their respective fields? + what other technologies might have been used? what advantage did CRISPR give? + what are some drawbacks or unknowns of the CRISPR technique? + what future developments of CRISPR could progress the research even more?

I want to focus on using CRIPSR/Cas in gene therapy/ medical biology and choose these three papers:
