Assignment Guidelines

Essay format – You may adopt 1st person narrative to construct your analysis. Your work needs to be word-processed. The word limit for your essay is 2500 words

Your discussion should adopt the structure of an academic essay:

An Introduction: briefly introduce the rationale underpinning this assignment to the reader and how you are structuring your discussion. Aim to clearly state how a sociological frame of analysis may inform your understanding of sport (250 words)

Autobiographical analysis –The object of this exercise is for you to think imaginatively and analytically about the relationships between your subjective engagement in sport/leisure and the social dimensions defining your experiences. It is important that you don’t lapse into a merely descriptive discussion. Rather, aim to provide a soundly reasoned sociological analysis of your subjective experiences (1750 words)

The following guidelines should be followed:

· Clearly articulate how a sociological frame of analysis – the ‘sociological imagination’ – informs your sporting/leisure autobiographical experiences.

· Make reference to concise definitions of relevant sociological concepts / theoretical frameworks covered in this Unit thus far, demonstrating clearly reasoned causation to your sporting autobiography.

· Offer logically argued sociological analysis throughout, making sure you clearly articulate the relationships between your subjective experiences and understandings of sport and the wider (micro-macro) social processes and cultural forces impacting upon you at any given time.

· Make reference to a wide range of relevant literature sources to support your discussion

Sociological analysis – Write a concluding section evaluating how your autobiographical analysis a) informs your understanding sport as a socially constructed phenomenon and b) your applied understanding / approaches to sporting enterprise in the future
(500 words)

Overall presentation: correct spelling and grammar, system of referencing (criteria which generally apply to University written work)

Appendices: include fully detailed / completed the following documents:

· ‘Double Entry Journal Tasks’
· ‘Key Concepts Task’
· ‘Exploring Sociology in Everyday Life’ Worksheet notes
· ‘Exploring Sociology in Everyday Life’ Essay (2-3 pages)
· Glossary of key concepts (fully referenced)
