Short Written Assignments – 15% of grade

All written assignments will be graded on clarity of presentation, careful analysis and argument, and grammar and style. Written assignments will be evaluated on evidence of a comprehensive grasp of readings and an integration of class discussions.

Each short assignment should be 2-3 double-spaced pages in length. While not required, some references to relevant literature may be cited. A higher grade will be awarded when there is reference to readings, creative integration of related ideas, and/or use of relevant personal or professional experiences. Each short written assignment should be submitted to me in hard copy during class on the following dates:

Class Five:        The Goals of Medicine & Health Care Policy

Short Assignment 3:
You are the Chief Executive Officer of a large, not-for-profit health system serving diverse populations in seven states. Medicare and Medicaid payments account for 70% of your reimbursement. 25% of patients are commercially insured, and 5% are uninsured/self-pay/uncompensated care.

You have an opportunity of forming a for-profit subsidiary, financed in part by a private equity firm, for the purpose of acquiring struggling hospitals. Draft the argument you would make to your Board of Directors for either pursuing, or declining to pursue, this opportunity. In crafting your response, please make reference to the ACHE Code of Ethics and your learnings from class thus far.
