Review of the article: Responding to Social Suffering: Practices of Resistance
Author’s argument
The article focuses on the need for resistance in the society as a result of various societal plights. Pineda-Madrid is a woman born and raised within a society surrounded by various challenges including the murdering of young women for religious purposes. She adds that religion has had a considerable influence in promoting gender inequality and making women the target of many homicidal actions particularly in Texas. She cites different cases in different towns around Texas, where young women’s bodies were found after being mutilated. She explains that practices of resistance arise from the formation of coalitions as a response to these social injustices. In the case of the feminicide in Texas, different non-governmental groups united to campaign against it and created awareness in the society. She also explains that social resistances are necessary to help the public understand the predicament and its impact on their lives.
Personal perspective
Acts of resistance are an important part of the society as they influence the society’s perspective on various aspects that might have been ignored in the past. In the case of El Paso, the author is placing emphasis on the death of young innocent women and pointing out how the acts of resistance, which came in the form of two coalitions, helped to raise awareness about these women’s plight. The author expresses the importance of these practices as they provide a foundation for the women’s families to relive their experiences and enlighten the society by allowing social imagination.
