OPTION 1:

Context: Many of you are currently working on 3rd year screen productions for a BFA or BCI course. For this assessment, you are required work individually to choose
one of the issues outlined above and explain the consequences of this issue for your 3rd year production. While you can refer to the same topic as assessment 1 if you
wish, you must use entirely different sources/references in this second piece of assessment.
In explaining the consequences of this issue for your production, you should:

Explain why the issue is significant for screen industry professionals and for society in general (Approx 150 words)
Outline why the issue is specifically relevant to your production (Approx 150 words)
Provide 150 word summaries of two academic and two valid industry sources as background to the issue (Approx 600 words in total).
Provide a comprehensive overview of how you are addressing the issue in relation to your production (Approx 1500 words). For instance: If the issue is Art Vs Commerce,
how are you managing the balance between the two? If the issue is social media savvy, how will you manage social media for your production? If the issue if screen
industry ethics, how will ensure you are being ethically responsible in making your production? And so on… (This section should be about Approx 1500 words). It is
important in this section to provide a detailed outline or explanation with specific examples related to your production.

OPTION 2:

You have recently graduated from University as a Film and Television or Animation specialist and you have a paid internship for a major Australian national broadcaster
(The ABC or SBS). For one of your first tasks you have been asked to complete the background research and sketch an outline for a documentary about an issue in the
screen industries.

Task: You must choose an issue related to the topics listed above and work individually to conduct background research for the documentary. While you can refer to the
same topic as assessment 1 if you wish, you must use entirely different sources/references in this second piece of assessment.

The producer has asked you to:

Develop a title for your proposed documentary that reflects the issue being explored.
Explain why the issue is significant for screen industry professionals and for society in general (100 words). You might explain why it is of interest to you
personally, and to a potential ABC or SBS audience.
Write a question and sub-questions that addresses a specific issue in the contemporary screen industries. (100 words).
Provide 100 word summaries of two academic and two valid industry sources as background to the issue (400 words in total). These should be different to the ones you
used for Assessment 1.
Annotate six additional resources that you believe will be of interest to the producer. These resources should provide different perspectives on the issue. These may
include online video clips, news articles, blog posts, websites and so on. Each annotation should be at least 50 words long. (300 words total).
Based on your research, develop a central argument for the documentary episode. This should take the form of a documentary synopsis of approximately 100 words. It
should summarise the key focus of the proposed documentary, particularly the issue to be explored.
Drawing on your research, develop an outline for the documentary demonstrating how the issue will be explored in depth. (1500 words). This should include an
explanation of your main ‘characters’ and why they are the appropriate people to feature/interview. You should provide a sense of the structure of the documentary and
describe the overlay you will use. Explain the overall style of the documentary (its genre, aesthetic etc).
To assist you with the task, you should complete the learning pathway available on Blackboard and then generate a master copy of your research package to submit to the
producer.
