1. Hamlet discovers that his uncle killed his father to be king of Denmark. And now the uncle. Claudius. has married Hamlet’s mother He’s quite upset. And angry at himself for not having avenged
the vile deeds. So he considers suicide and the various pains of life.
2. Macbeth. through the strong prompting of his wife. has killed the king of Scotland in order to become king. Macbeth starts to lose his mind and will soon be defeated in battle. His wife has just
committed suicide and so Macbeth considers the meaninglessness of it all in this short speech.
3. Shylock. a Jew. is the villain of Merchant of Venice. and he is claiming “a pound of flesh” as promised from a customer who can’t repay his debts. Shylock is castigated for his greed and
cruelty. but in this speech Shakespeare offers him some choice humanizing words. “Can we identify with our antagonists?” Shakespeare asks.
