Profile of a person, place, or thing

Students will write an essay that profiles an individual, group, place, or event based on personal observation. In addition to addressing these features in the final product, students will engage in invention activities that encourage them to revise according to the criteria found on the assignment sheet (i.e. peer review workshops, self-inventory, instructor feedback, and/or conferences)

.Format
All written work must be produced on a computer and word processing system and submitted in hard copy, unless otherwise specified. All documents must be double-spaced with standard one-inch margins, a standard type size (12 pt.), and a conventional font such as Times New Roman. All documents should be stapled and should consist of extended discursive prose, as opposed to outlines or lists. The document’s overall format (headers, etc.) should follow MLA conventions.

Criteria
Upon the completion of this assignment, the student should demonstrate the ability to:
•  write a profile that functions as a written portrait of the student’s chosen subject
•  depict the subject in an engaging manner that conveys the its significance and unique attributes
•  give important background information that contextualizes the subject
•  establish a clear perspective, or “angle,” on the subject and craft a clear, focused thesis that establishes that angle
•  support that thesis with well-paragraphed details, including-but not limited to-specific information about the subject, sensory images, figurative language, and dialogue or anecdote
•  use tone and language appropriate for a clearly defined, public audience
•  evidence clear, well-edited writing that is free of proofreading errors and errors of grammar, mechanics, and syntax
