If there can ever be a document that is always considered a “work in progress,” it is the resume. A resume is a document that everyone has in common, and it is probably one of the more important documents we write. Considering that most professionals will change careers 3.5 times, and work for 10 different employers during their careers, it’s no wonder that most people will spend a few hours each year updating and revising their resume.
There are different types and styles of resumes available; ultimately you need to determine the type and style best suited to your own needs. You will come to understand that there are various ways of constructing a resume, and people seem to have their own piece of advice- don’t be discouraged by this. Learn as much as you can and be open to advice so that you are in control of your options and can make your own decisions. For this class we will focus on a common resume for folks seeking entry-level positions – an Experiential Resume. There
are some examples on the course Moodle site, as well as plenty of examples available through Career Center resources as well as general internet searches.
Accompanying your resume will be a cover letter. This letter addresses the skills described in the job/internship ad, and explains how the resume matches those qualifications. It takes an opportunity to go more in-depth about the material in the resume.
In addition to the resume, we’ll also be working on a goal statement. This helps to establish what you’re seeking in a career, and how you plan on getting there. You are required to use three resources for the goal statement – Check out the Bureau of Labor Statistics Employment Outlook guide as one of your sources, and make sure that the goal statement is thesis-driven, well-structured, and well cited (internal citations and Works Cited).
