  1. Does Tariq Ramadan believe that Liberalism and/or Secularism are compatible (or can easily co-exist) with Islam? What evidence does he provide? In your answer you will need to briefly, BRIEFLY, define both Liberalism and Secularism.

 

  1. Use Samuel Huntington’s “Clash of Civilizations” to explain and assess the rise of radical Islam, and ISIS in particular, in the Middle East.  To what extent is Huntington’s thesis explanatory?

 

Grading:

  1. Remember that this is a test, not a “theme paper.” Approach this assignment as if you were answering these questions in an in-class essay test. In other words, don’t meander or “BS” me. Just answer the question.
  2. The best essays show a broad understanding of class material. Answers must be grounded firmly in course texts. The more command you can show of course material the better your grade will be.
  3. Related to #2, the best way to show evidence from the texts is through direct quotation.
  4. The best essays are also organized logically and written in solid English.

 

Format: Write in 12 Point Times New Roman with normal margins. Please paginate. You do not need a cover page. Do not use any materials other than course materials. When quoting a text, simply put the author and the page number in parentheses. Example: Tariq Ramadan writes, “Liberalism and Political Islam are not incompatible” (Ramadan, 500).
