The Topic is:
National Security vs. Individual Rights: The FBI vs. Apple There are many agencies tasked with maintaining U.S. security, but technology has made the lines between what is allowed to maintain security and what is a violation of an individual’s rights murkier. Earlier this year the FBI was trying to gain access to the phone of the San Bernardino shooter to locate information about potential future attacks or get information about terrorist networks, but the phone was locked and they were unable to open it. They requested help opening the phone from Apple who refused to help on the grounds that any technological workaround would make any iPhone user vulnerable to unauthorized FBI access. Ultimately, a third party unlocked the phone before the case went to a hearing, but questions still remain about what the government should or should not be able to do in the interests of national security. Find an article (citing when appropriate) that discusses this issue. First, analyze what the author is saying- are they supporting Apple’s position or the FBI’s position? Why? Then consider the other side of the argument. If the author is supporting Apple, what do you think could be the potentially negative ramifications for American security? If the author is supporting the FBI, what do you think could be the potentially negative ramifications for an individual’s privacy? What do you think about this issue? Do you think Apple should have given the FBI access or do you think Apple was right to stand their ground? Why? How should the agencies and organizations charged with protecting us also balance our individual right to privacy?
