Essay 1: Poetry Analysis-writing

Assignment: Select a poem from the reading list or textbook and write an original analysis in which you demonstrate your ability to read the poem closely by supporting your comments with paraphrases and quotations. Make sure your introduction includes the poet’s name, the poem’s title, and a focused thesis. Concentrate on forming clear topic sentences that unify each paragraph and clearly support the thesis.

For this paper, outside sources are not required. If sources are used, they should be limited to biographical or historical information from print or electronic library sources, and they must be properly documented and cited using MLA style. The use of literary analysis or interpretation by others is strongly discouraged. DO NOT reuse a paper from another course.

Format: Double-spaced, typed pages (minimum of 600 words). Number pages in the upper right hand comer, 1/2″ from the top edge of the paper. Top, bottom, left, and right margins should be l”. The font should be Times New Roman 12 point; do not use fancy typefaces or large font sizes.
