Reflect: Our political system is characterized by certain fundamental features to include a system of laws, rights, and liberties. The laws, created and supported by the Constitutional framework, are designed to protect and secure the rights and liberties of individuals and groups throughout the U.S. However, the government also has an obligation to provide for the security of its citizens from serious internal and external threats that could cause grave or severe damage to our country. The need for homeland and national security can create a dilemma where conflicts emerge between these security needs and the demands for civil rights and liberties.

The obligations that the U.S government has toward the U.S citizens is the “safety of the citizens “every citizen expects for the government to guard themselves from foreign invasion. Sometimes government interfere in the privacy of the individuals such as social media (Facebook) which can be used to find a robber and fire people from their jobs. When it comes to terrorism, we need to give more importance to security over privacy. We cannot compromise the security of the nation for the sake of privacy. We have already paid the price of this mistake in the past. The biggest reason for the 9/11 attacks on America was failure of security agencies. Prior to 9/11, the government security agencies used to give more importance to the privacy than security. But, after 9/11, things have changed.

The original framers of the government agree with liberty. They were in favor of giving more rights to the citizens of the country. With the introduction of bill of rights in the constitution, the framers of the constitution tried to protect the privacy of the citizens of the USA. For example, privacy of beliefs (1st Amendment), privacy of the home against demands that it be used to house soldiers (3rd Amendment), privacy of the person and possessions as against unreasonable searches (4th Amendment), and the 5th Amendment’s privilege against self-incrimination, which provides protection for the privacy of personal information.  In addition, the Ninth Amendment states that the “enumeration of certain rights” in the Bill of Rights “shall not be construed to deny or disparage other rights retained by the people.
