Brief description: Answer one of the following questions. In your essay, compare two films from different countries. Select these films either from the primary list watched and discussed in class, or the supplementary films listed for each week in the “Weekly Schedule” below. Do not write about a film you discussed in either your PPT presentation or your film review critique assignment.
1. A frequent effect of Asian national cinemas is to problematize the self-image of the producing country and, at the same time, the image of that country in the minds of (potential) Western audiences. What filmic strategies enable such problematisations?
2. A common concern in contemporary films from Asia is a shifting conception of gender, and particularly of gender hierarchies. Male characters are frequently dysfunctional, inarticulate, lacking any direction, while female characters struggle to find agency. To what extent do contemporary films use this crisis to imagine different understandings of gender?
3. The Lunchbox demonstrates that films can travel across borders. Some films produced in Asia, such as Sunny, often prove to be major box office successes across the Asian region, but remain almost unknown in the West. Other films, such as Departures, seem to do better in the West than in their home country. Why do you think this is so? (Your essay need not discuss these particular films.)
4. One function of several Asian national cinemas is to deal with traumatic memories, and by depicting a “post-traumatic” identity to help viewers remember what is too painful to recuperate. Examine the significance of trauma in two films.
Your essay should:
• be 2500 words; • be presented either in Times New Roman (12-pt font) or Georgia (11-pt font), 1.5- spaced, 2cm margins; • use an approved referencing style, e.g. MLA, Chicago, Harvard, APA; • be fully referenced with at least five relevant academic references (books, book chapters or journal articles) (You can locate scholarly [peer-reviewed] articles by using the library databases such as Project Muse or Academic Advanced Premier. You can find these by using the Library’s Multi Search: >Databases>Project Muse, e.g. You can also put a key word into Multi Search under books and articles, but you need to be precise in your choice of term, or you’ll get hundreds of irrelevant references);
• list “Works Cited” at the end of your essay. This should not be a general bibliography or references, but contain all and only works cited within the essay; and
• avoid the use of subheadings (a coherent argument should link components of a short essay such as this).

Note: I discuss the two films before which is lunch box and floating lives, so this two films can not discuss in this essay.
