Mobile Health Applications for Consumers

Mobile Health Applications for Consumers

Description outlining the creativity and innovation elements:WHO defines mobile health as “medical and public health practice supported by mobile devices, such as mobile phones, patient monitoring devices, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and other wireless devices”. Mobile health involves the use of voice and short messaging service (SMS) as well as more complex functionalities such as 3G systems, global positioning systems (GPS), and Bluetooth technology. A mobile application (or mobile app) is a software application designed to run on smartphones, tablet computers and other mobile devices. The goal of this activity is to design/define a mobile health application for consumers (not for the hospitals, healthcare practitioners, or doctors). During the design process, the activity group will integrate the application of work analysis/ergonomics methods and design principles into the concept and design of a mobile health smartphone application for consumers. In addition, they will illustrate how the of work analysis/ergonomicsapproach to such an application can lead to a useful, usable, and satisfying user experience while simultaneously improving patient outcomes such as healing, knowledge and safety.
Activity management (deliverables and meeting with the students):
The activity groups will propose their mobile health applications to me. After agreement on the application, the group should startto design their application. They can meet with me during my office hours based on the need. The competition and the exhibition day will take place on Tuesday 11/17/2015 and/or Monday12/21/2015. It is expected to finish their design by those dates.
Requirements(AUM will always aim for the academic activities to be self-sufficient and funded at their initial stage and for the first production, however, for some activities a budget may be approved):
Grades( weight and how the activity will be graded):
A grade out of 5% for the enrolled relevant courses of class A activity. The grading scheme is as below:
Item Grade Score
Team participation 10
Demonstration – Poster/Competition 20
Demonstration – Report 70
Total 100
Activity report is a technical report will be graded along the following dimensions:
1. Usage of technical report writing skills
2. Assessment and alignment with user needs through contextual inquiry
3.Application of work analysis/ergonomicsmethods
4.Application of work analysis/ergonomicsdesign principles
5.Use of an iterative design process involving formative evaluation and testing
6.Description of application need and business viability
Impact and output (scientific, community, research, publications, conference participation, industry, or business values):Successful and chosen activities will find an opportunity to participate in the “Mobile Health Applications for Consumers” Design Competition in conjunction with the 2016 International Symposium on Human Factors and Ergonomics in Health Care: Shaping the Futureto be held April 13–16, at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, San Diego, California.
