Cultural Diversity in the United States writing Assignment- Research Paper
The research essay for this class is an analytical paper that reviews one of the topics, themes, or issues discussed in the class. These topics are in bold print next to the week headings on your syllabus. The paper should be 6-7 pages paper, double spaced, 12- point font, on the topic you chose. This paper should first summarize the topic, theme, or issue and provide some background information gathered from the assigned readings. It should have a central thesis, i.e. answering questions such as: What is the main issue or debate related to that topic? How have anthropologists attempted to study and theorize about this question? What methods have been used by anthropologists to study this topic? You should then use evidence from the readings and discussion to support your thesis statement, spending several paragraphs detailing your argument and providing supporting examples. Next, relate the readings and discussion to the larger question of cultural diversity in the United States: How does this debate/question help us better understand US history, diversity, and contemporary life? This can be as broad as connecting your thesis to a theoretical concept like culture or as specific as relating it another article from a different topic. If you feel like the readings or arguments are lacking something, or could be deepened or improved, you may spend a page or two explaining these deficiencies and describing how you would make it better. Finally, the paper should have a clear conclusion that explains the lessons learned for anthropology from the question/issue/topic.
