1. Do you think that negative opinions people have of non-standard dialects and languages other than English are reflections of people’s negative stereotypes and attitudes about other people’s characteristics, as opposed to being purely linguistic dislike for “bad” grammar? For instance, do you think that negative attitudes about African American English can be an indicator of possibly hidden racial bias? The same questions holds for Hispanics: do some people dislike Spanish language because they think immigration from Spanish speaking countries is dangerous for the US? Do not limit yourself to these two languages/dialects, you can talk about any language/dialect you’re interested in.

2.Think about those times when you interact with people from other social groups: it could be either different gender, different sexual orientation, different age, different socio-economic class. Have you noticed any speech differences? Can you think of some concrete examples? Feel free to give several examples, and try to think about not just words and vocabulary, but also phonology and syntax.
