Instructions

Each week you will be asked to write a paper on all the readings for the week. Please type your responses or write legibly and keep the journal separate from your class notes.  The paper must have standard font and margins and be double-spaced. Do not simply summarize the readings, but think critically about the central issues the articles addressed and provide a critique. Here are some examples of questions you should try to answer in your responses:

• What is the main argument of this paper?
• Who is the article talking about?
• What did they tell us about the culture of these people? (Subsistence? Economics? Environment? Kinship?)
• What art forms are discussed?
• Why did the author discuss this art form (how is it important to understanding the group)?
• Does the author write from a particular perspective or have any biases?
• What are the strengths and weaknesses of the article? Be specific, use examples.
