The metaphor is a perfect example to communication, since a person cannot inhale and exhale at the same time. Aperson cannot talk and listen at the same time, this is where the metaphors inhale and exhaling stem from. Inhale and exhaling separates communication into two different parts. These two separate parts are vital to the communication process. Communication is sending and receivinginformation and communicators do both at the same time. While a person is talking, the other person tend to notice how that person is responding. As a person is listening to another person, the listener tend to give nonverbal cues. The metaphor is pure genius since he compares communication to breathing. People, and ay living human thing cannot be live without oxygen. Communication is the same as oxygen people can not living without communicating with other people. The metaphors inhaling and exhaling focuses on perception and listening. Stewart’s metaphors inhaling and exhaling best describe the importance of Interpersonal communication. in order for communication to occur there must be two people involved. Communication is not a one way process where one person sends the message and the other receives. Communication is a two way process with individuals sending and receiving messages simultaneously. People take in information and the impressions about other. How we as people view other people, relationships, and how we listen is apart of the inhaling process. People being open, expressing ideas or thoughts, feeling, and speaking out is apart of the exhaling process. According to Colossians 4:6, “Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.” (Holy Bible, NKJV) The words of God’s people should be seasoned with salt meaning tasteful and appropriate.
