Question

<pclass=”msonormal” align=”center” http:=”” www.homeworkminutes.com=”” “=”” style=”box-sizing: border-box; text-align: center;”>.5pt”>What Kind of Résumé Should I Use?

There are three common types of résumés : chronologicalfunctional, and combination.

Choose the résumé type that best targets the prospective job and best reflects your skills and qualifications.

Use a chronological résumé to show that your experience logically leads to the prospective job.

chronological résumé summarizes what you have accomplished, starting with the most recent events.

Use a chronological résumé when your education and experience show

a- a logical preparation for the prospective position

b- a steady progression leading to the present

Use a functional résumé to emphasize the skills most important for the prospective position.

functional résumé emphasizes job titles, responsibilities or functions – regardless of chronology.

Use a functional résumé when:

  1. a) Your work experience, skills, and expertise match the position requirements
  2. b) Your education and experience are not the usual route to the job
  3. c) You want to deemphasize formal education

Use a combination résumé to emphasize the skills you have acquired through your work experience.

The combination résumé focuses on your work experience skills.

Use the combination résumé when:

  1. a) You want to combine paid and unpaid work
  2. b) Your education and experience aren’t the usual pathway to the job
  3. c) You’re changing fields
  4. d) Your current work might send the wrong signal

How Do Résumé Formats Differ?

• Chronological – focus on “when”, then “what”

– emphasize academic qualifications

• Functional – showcase qualifications according to job functions or responsibilities

– are used by highly-qualified applicants

• Combination (Skills) – summarize experience and acquired skills needed for the job

– list job titles under “Employment History”

In a chronological résumé , start with the heading most relevant to the reader.

  • Include these headings:Educationand Work Experience.
  • Include the date range, job position title or education received, organization’s name, city, province.
  • List duties using strong, descriptive verbs.Apply parallel structure.
  • Omit low-level or irrelevant work experience.
  • Consistently format each job or education credential.

Since functional résumés focus on the “what”, highlight the most relevant information.

  • Begin with “Career Achievements”.
  • List “Employment History,” and describe your responsibilities as they relate to the prospective job.
  • Outline conferences, clubs, or associations that link to your chosen job.
  • Place “Education” near the end – unless it is directly relevant.

In the combination résumé, use aspects of the prospective job as headings.

  • Combine paid and unpaid work, classes, activities, and public service under each descriptive heading.
  • Use (at least three) headings that reflect the current job jargon.
  • Put the most important category first.
  • List paid jobs under “Employment History” near the end.(Omit the details as these would be redundant.)

What Parts of Résumé Formats are the Same?

  • Career objectives or achievements
  • Communications or technical skills and interpersonal profiles
  • Education
  • Honours and awards
  • References (optional)

Less frequently, a “Career Objective” is included. Carefully analyze whether or not you should include one.
