Introduction to Courts

1. Case Summary:

Use your text and the internet to research the case of Payne v. Tennessee. In a narrative format of 500 or more words, outline the case. Give the facts, issue, and court holding.

2. Case Analysis 1:

In a minimum of 200 words, discuss and explain mitigating evidence, including why it is used during the sentencing of a defendant.

3. Case Analysis 2:

In a minimum of 200 words, discuss and explain victim impact statements, including how they impacted the result in the Payne case.

4. Executive Decisions:

If you were a prosecutor, discuss whether or not you would use victim impact statements in every sentencing hearing where there was a victim. Include in your discussion occasions where a victim impact statement might hurt your efforts. Minimum 200 words.
