Interpreting Gospel Passages

Read chapter 10 of Duvall and Hays,Journey into God’s Word: Your Guide to Understanding and Applying the Bible. This chapter addresses keys steps for interpretingand applying Gospel passages. In order to complete the requirements for Interpretation Project 1, you must answer2 interpretive questions to Matthew 24:36–44; 24:45–51; 25:1–13 and apply the central message of these episodes to your life today.

Complete the 3 steps below in relation to Matthew 24:36–44; 24:45–51; 25:1–13 1. The project must be between 400–800 words typed in Times New Roman and double spaced. In addition to a study Bible, consult, interact with, and document at least 3 commentaries on Matthew, citing each source. Format the project in a single Word document using current APA, MLA, or Turabian style (whichever corresponds to your degree program).

The first step is to discover the central message of each episode (periscope or story) and then write it out in the appropriate column below.Refer to pages 108 and 109 in Duvall and Hays for a good example.

The second step is to determine what the gospel writer is trying to say to his readers by the way he puts the smaller stories together. In this step, you will try to discover what the three stories have in common. Write out 1–3 paragraphsthat show the connections between all three episodes. As you contemplate these episodes, ask what the three have in common. What is the common message?

The third step is to apply the central message of the three episodes to your life today. It should always be our goal when engaging in inductive Bible study to apply the main message of the biblical text to our own lives. Write out at least 1 application that is clearly based on the central message of Matthew 24:36–44; 24:45–51; 25:1–13.

Complete the first interpretation project by using the chart below. Save the chart in a word document using the following template for the file name: Your last name, Your first name_Year_BIBL110-Section Number_IP1.
