The purpose of this assignment is to develop and sharpen your critical thinking and writing skills.  A major objective for writing a reaction paper is to teach students how to clearly express and support personal opinions—an activity essential to all social sciences.

Your assignment is to react to this controversial statement:

Recent lethal injections that have gone wrong are  in violation of the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment.*

In your essay, you should include these four major areas:

1) Clearly define the issue addressed in the statement;

2) Clearly state your position on the issue;

4 ) Conclude concisely restating your position clearly.

Your essays should be no less than 250 words and no more than 500 words (more is acceptable, if need be).
