2. Review the European tour-operating scene with respect to profitability and market share
3. Examine the nature of tour operating and understand how operators interact with other sectors of the tourism industry

Instructions to students
In December 2010 mass demonstrations erupted in Tunisia which led to the resignation of president Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali in January 2011. His downfall sparked significant political unrest across many Arab countries, promoted by pro-democracy activists. Five years on, BBC Radio 4 have asked you, a tour operator expert, for an interview to talk about the impacts of this event for the tourism industry. To prepare for the interview you need to develop a report using Tunisia and Egypt as examples for Arab spring countries.
Your report must include the following aspects:
• a brief explanation of the role of tour operators
• an overview of the European tour operator market In terms of market share over the last five years
• a comparison of three different tour operators that offer holidays in Egypt and/or Tunisia (you must choose different types of tour operators),
• an evaluation of the effects of the Arab spring regarding the continuation of tour operations in Egypt and Tunisia, with a focus on the three tour operators you have identified above,
• an evaluation of the impacts that tour operators’ decisions to reduce, suspend or withdrawn packages to Tunisia and Egypt had on other sectors of the tourism industry (e.g. accommodation, restaurants, airlines).
Where you are unable to find specific statistics, you should discuss general relevant principles of inclusive tour operations.
