You must answer all 5 questions on the exam. Responses should be 1.5 – 2 pages (375-500 words) long per question and follow APA guidelines. Each answer must fully demonstrate an acute knowledge of the topic or grasp of the theory at hand.
The Midterm Examination is worth 20% of your final grade.

Several structural changes have been proposed to increase voter turnout, and a great deal of research has addressed voter mobilization, but the core of our motivations to care about politics and to turn out to vote warrants further analysis. Using the course readings to support your position, explain what factors you believe serve to create apathy about politics and what if anything the government can do to address these factors so people start to care about voting and politics.

2. How can new technologies increase voter turnout and build social capital? Discuss the differences between traditional / community-based social capital and virtual / on-line social capital.

3. Are strong civic and community associations required for a vital democracy? How can we encourage people to be more civically engaged? What are the challenges inherent with the Internet or other technologies in facilitating civic involvement and participation in community associations?

4. What are the conditions necessary for Millennial voters to lead a resurgence of political participation in America? How will their penchant for civic participation but also disillusionment with the current party system affect their future voting and political behavior? Also address the importance of social capital to this cohort in your response.

5. Public opinion is often the result of personal experiences with the liberal-conservative ideological spectrum not accurately depicting the views held by most U.S. citizens. Do U.S. citizens adhere to core beliefs or consistent ideologies? If so, explain with evidence as to why. If not, discuss how we can best explain and classify public opinion in the United States.
