QALYS – their importance and usage

1. The seminar will be organised around a debate.
2. So the student should to be able to support Qalys and persuade with arguments why they should be used (instead of Dalys) in a cost effectiveness analysis.

3. Structure: (Team QALY):?
a) Introduction on QALYs. –definition, when/why/how it used in a cost effectiveness analysis and in constructing a Markov model.
b) explain how a QALY is calculated using different methods for valuing health states (visual analogue scale, standard gamble, time trade-off) ?
c) Explain the distinction between the different methods for valuing health states.
d) The case for QALYs.
e) To consider the pros and cons with using QALYs (versus DALYs) as the principal outcome measure in economic evaluation(especially when constructing a Markov Model in a cost-effectiveness analysis) ?
