Connections Essay # 8 Instructions
The War on Terrorism
Write a minimum of 300 words in proper paragraphs (4-6 sentences long) that you spell/grammar check before submitting your APA formatted document for SafeAssign
review. If plagiarism is found, intentional or not, fix it and submit the corrected file to the link again. You have three attempts; only the last one will be graded.
You must use cited evidence from the Lowe chapter to support your statements. Your citations must include page numbers.
We began this term with a major war that was initiated after an act of terrorism (the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand and his wife) and one that lacked adequate
time and effort for diplomatic and political negotiations among the warring parties, efforts that might have made avoiding WWI a possibility.
Imagine how difficult it is today for international leaders to negotiate with small “cells” of individuals who consider blowing themselves up with innocent civilians
an honorable way to fight for their causes or beliefs. How does one negotiate with people who strap bombs to children? How does one negotiate with small groups, some
hidden in caves, with so many factions and diverse groups that there is no single leadership that can control their followers, even if major powers and the interested
terrorist leader actually came to a resolve?
Each of the four major global war encounters we have examined this term have had major shifts in the way wars are fought. How does one win in a world of terror? How
does one win when there is no clear or reachable enemy to fight? How does one win when the battlefields are in cities, in neighborhoods? How does the global society,
especially members of the United Nations, find ways to control those who want to return to old methods like imperialism, piracy, espionage, hijacking, or shooting down
planes, or blowing up major landmarks or buildings filled with thousands of innocent people just trying to go to work to pay their bills? How do you negotiate when
both sides have the ultimate, nuclear weaponry in their arsenal for war?
Pick one of the incidents of terrorism explained in this week’s final course chapter and consider the way that situation was handled and described. Were you familiar
with that incident before reading about it? Why did you choose it? Were you or your city, family, or friends immediately affected by one of these acts? (Only answer
that question if you feel comfortable sharing your personal experience.) In retrospect, how could that tragic event have been avoided? Could diplomacy or more
negotiations improved the outcome? What else could those participants have done to avoid what happened? You must use cited evidence from the Lowe chapter to support
your statements. Your citations must include page numbers.
Did reading this chapter change your impression of what really took place in some newsworthy event that you recall, even if you were not personally affected? If so,
explain why, and also try to understand that what we watch in the news the week something took place (current events) will always be less thorough than what we learn
through our history books years after the event when all of the pertinent documentation has been combed through to get us all closer to the truth.
