Geo-Mashup Directions

Objective:

The required competencies of this course include gaining an appreciation for a geographical imagination and thinking spatially with thematic maps. This assignment is
designed for you to be a human geographer by selecting one of the themes and creating a map to illustrate that theme, usually referred to as a Geo-Mashup. A Geo-Mashup
is the process of using interactive mapping software to plot your own information. For this assignment you’ll be using Google Maps to create your own geo-mashup

For this assignment you will select one of the following themes:

Trace the origins of a particular food such as a hamburger, french fries, or any other food you like. Be sure to consider all of the ingredients required to make the
food. Map where each element of the food originated and trace how it moved across the globe and made it’s way to your plate.
Map your own family’s migration pattern. Where did your ancestors come from and how did your family ancestors migrate around the world to place you where you live
today? You may go back as far as you are comfortable.
If you have traveled a great deal in your own life, map your own, personal migration. Explain the significance of each location and the effect it hand on you or you
had on it.
Tasks:

Select one of the two themes and narrow that topic to the specific food you plan to map or how far back in family history you want to go.
Research the information you need for the map.
Create your Geo-Mashup using Google Maps. (See the resources section for details on how to create your map using Google Maps.)
Your map should include:
A placemark for each point of significance on the map, including a short description of that explains the significance of placemark in detail
Lines to connect the placemarks and show the subject’s migration patterns
Shapes to highlight any specific regions of significance, and a placemark to explain the significance of the region.
Write a paragraph that explains the story that your map tells, include APA citation of any research materials used to create the map.
