Final Examination

Both Harriet Beecher Stowe and Mark Twain use black male characters, Uncle Tom and Jim, to write stories about race/class, the national identity/ disidentity, and relations between “blacks” and “whites”. The relationships between Uncle Tom and a variety of whites and Jim and Huck model the mutual construction of white and black as well as possibilities of a “national” identity. Write an essay comparing Harriet Beecher Stowe’s representation of Uncle Tom with Mark Twain’s representation of Jim. You may want to consider one or two of the following questions in developing your own essay. 1) Is Jim’s relationship to Huck similar to Tom’s relationship to Little Eva? 2)How does the representation of Tom and Jim help to construct whiteness? 3)How do Twain and Stowe use their black and white characters to develop notions of bondage and freedom? 4)Are the actions of Jim and Tom similar, and do their actions develop from a similar view of the world? 5)What role does religion/ superstition play in the characters of Tom and Jim? 6)Both Tom and Jim make a journey South. Do these journeys mean the same thing? How are they alike and how are they different?
