Fictional Visual Environments and Art History

Task: select a single film or a cable/television series that you find interesting in a visual manner…the set, the costumes, the CGI, etc.

1. Describe at least three to five visual elements that you found interesting in the selected film or television series.
2. Of the above mentioned visual elements, describe the cultural and/or artistic connection you believe exists to other works of art or stylistic time periods…for example, an obvious sample would be the film Marie Antoinette with Kirsten Dunst and the Late Baroque / Rococo era or go off-book and examine a sci-fi or fantasy work and compare it to a visual style?
3. What is the basic plot or narrative of the film or cable/television series and does the visual environment(s) enhance or distract the viewer?
4. Sarah Thornton, author of Seven Days in the Art World, states “Our culture is now thoroughly televisualized or YouTubed.” If so, then, does the general public benefit from a film or television series that tries to create or incorporate cultural and artistic connections or do such connections go unnoticed since some lament we read less…thus, we know less about the cultural and artistic connections?
5. Task: Then, type a 2 page (double-spaced, traditional fonts, paragraph format) response to the above posed questions and/or considerations. Describe the work in your introduction as if the reader has never seen the film/series before let alone the works of art. Include as much detail as possible, the artist’s name if known, a title if given, make note of elements such as subject matter, composition, and artistry, innovation, quality of work, etc. The majority of the paper should be in your own words but if you need to include someone else’s work, please use quotation marks at least this simply avoids the hazards of plagiarism, which would result in a zero for the assignment.
