This coursework assessment is designed to allow students to show how the following learning outcomes have been achieved:
1. Understand the nature and significance of parenthood under English Law;
2. Understand key areas of law and procedure affecting children.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the role the legal system plays in constituting notions of parenting and parenthood.
4. Appreciate the scope and content of children’s rights and the law relating to children.
5. Evaluate current debates about the ‘balance’ to be struck between public power, family privacy and children’s rights
6. Select and prioritise materials from a range of sources, both legal and non-legal;
7. Analyse legal problems relating to the family and identify and apply the relevant law;
8. Develop enhanced skills of analysis, evaluation and problem solving;
9. Gain an understanding of the interaction between law and policy.

Critically evaluate the welfare principle in s.1(1) of the Children Act 1989 as a mechanism for
