Respond to one of your colleagues’ posts and:
Make recommendations for the design choice.
Explain whether you think that this is the appropriate t test to use for the question. Why or why not?
As a lay reader, were you able to understand the results and their implications? Why or why not?
research Question
Do boys or girls spend more time playing video games on a typical school day?
Null Hypothesis
Ho = boys spend less time playing video games on typical school days.
Research Design
A quantitative descriptive research design would align with this research question. The research question is not asking a why question so using a quantitative descriptive research design would be appropriate. The research question is simply trying to find what currently exists and the data collected could be used for future research.
Comparison Means Test Used
Using SPSS, an independent samples t-test was calculated. Since the independent samples t-test can only test two means at a time to find the difference (boys and girls), this test was decided to be the most practical to use (Laureate Education, 2016). The independent samples t-test shows if there is a difference between the means.
Dependent and Independent Variables
The dependent variable used for this statistical testing was hours spent playing video games on a typical school day. This was the test variable where the mean is calculated on (Laureate Education, 2016). The independent variable was T1 student’s sex. This was the grouping variable.
Findings
Within the group statistics, the following information was calculated: Males N = 10323 with a mean of 2.30, standard deviation of 1.639 and standard error of mean .016; Females N = 9887 with a mean of 1.30, standard deviation of .882 and standard error of mean .009.
The next step was to study the independent samples t-test produced by SPSS. The first area of examination would be the Levene’s test, which tests the null hypothesis showing the variances are equal. The Sig. or p-value shows a .000, which gave the indication with high probability that the null hypothesis could be rejected. Choosing the equal variances not assumed line the t statistic showed 54.601 with the associated p-value of .000 which shows that the results are statistically significant at the .001 level (Laureate Education, 2016). The mean difference between boys and girls is 1.005. The 95% confidence interval of the difference gave a lower of .969 and an upper of 1.041.
Research Question Answer
To refer back to the research question, do boys or girls spend more time playing video games on a typical school day, the statistical testing conducted showed that there was a difference in the number of hours’ boys spend more time playing video games on a typical school day over girls.
