For this exercise, I am asking you to envision the possibility of your death.  Although it seems as though this is contrary to the study of positive psychology and well-being, I truly believe that in order to create and live a meaningful life, we must have a certain acceptance and understanding of our own mortality. Research on the good death constitutes a new frontier of the current positive psychology movement. We need to learn how to talk about death in a way that is liberating, humanizing, and life-enhancing. Through an increased understanding of death acceptance we may learn to treat each other with respect and compassion. I understand that this is difficult, particularly in Western culture, where death is often a taboo topic of discussion. For this week’s homework, there are three parts. (1) I would like for you to write a eulogy that you would like to have read at your funeral. I recommend that you take at least 30 minutes away from noise and other individuals to think about this. (2) In addition to your eulogy, please turn in a separate summary on what this was like for you to think so deeply about your own life and death. Given your reflection here, what things might you want to do differently now? (3) You are  required to incorporate some information (2 or 3 different research studies) about the psychological benefits of death acceptance into your paper as well. Failure to include empirical evidence will result in point loss. Your paper should be APA compliant, containing both an abstract and a reference page. Your paper should be 4-5 pages in total, including your abstract and reference page with a minimum of 2 sources within the past 10 years.
